Al Gore and the way it’s gonna be

The best way to start a Friday is to angry up my coal and oil loving friends. Al Gore gave a speech yesterday. That sentence alone may send some running to the exits, but I happen to think Gore is enjoying the most important phase of his career. He correctly points out that with rising coal and oil prices, cleaner alternatives are now not only economically possible but very soon could be economically preferable. I think it’s now easy to see a national power grid where nuclear, hydroelectric and biomass provide a base load while wind and solar are used locally to reduce the requirements on the grid. There may be small scale uses for coal and oil in the future, mostly likely in material production or peaking plants, but we’re ready to move on from those sources as the dominant method of energy production now. Ready, yes. Willing? Eventually, I think so.

(Note that, in true bipartisan spirit, I’ve merged the energy policies of Barack Obama and John McCain).
