Check out my tundra pals!

So, do you have friends who live closer to Russia than they do to a McDonalds?

I do.

Linda Hanson from the Duluth News-Tribune wrote a feature story about my Range-native Alaska friends, the Rudstroms, today. C.O. and AnnMarie live with their 1 1/2 year old son Harold in Brevig Mission, Alaska, an Inuit village on the shores of the Bering Strait. I went to school with AnnMarie and C.O. was the organizer of the now sadly defunct Big Sturgeon Ice Race that I’ve written about before. As native Iron Rangers, the Rudstroms prove that our people can go anywhere and do anything so long as it’s not too hot.

My favorite line from the story?

Whenever they go outside the village, they bring a rifle. C.O. had one unarmed encounter with a grizzly when he was panning for gold in a nearby stream, and he doesn’t want another.

Oh, I’m sorry, metro reader. Was your commute back to White Bear a little long today? Boo freaking hoo. These people have to pan for gold and fight bears!
