Essar restates desire to turn shovels soon on Minnesota Steel

The Grand Rapids Herald-Review reported yesterday on a presentation from Essar Steel to Itasca County about the giant Indian company’s impending groundbreaking for the Minnesota Steel project near Nashwauk.

August, they say. And Essar officials are still talking like they plan to build the full steel mill with the iron concentrate mine, which has been one of the major questions about this project. Will this just be a mine that feeds Essar’s many new North American steel mills or the fully integrated mine and steel mill the Iron Range was promised?

August is much closer than the “three months from now” lines we had been getting and so it would appear likely that something will start happening near Nashwauk very soon. A source who attended the Itasca County Railroad Authority meeting Tuesday said that Essar officials showed a video that depicted massive global growth of its company and intentions to grow even more. One slogan in the video read, “To Reach Beyond Our Grasp.” Meantime, the narrator was a man with a British accent and the background music was described as “ominous” at one point and “militaristic” at another.

I don’t what all that really means for this project or the Iron Range as a whole, but I do contend that life around just keeps getting more interesting.
