Filing tidbits

Some northern Minnesota filing news …

In Duluth’s House District 7B, Brandon Clokey has finally filed, rounding out the DFL pool at five candidates: Roger Reinert, Marsh Stenersen, John Derbis, Daniel Maryland and Clokey. I would put Reinert at the head of this pack with Stenersen within striking distance and the others looking for a way to break into the top tier.

Meantime, in my home district of 3A, we will have an Independence Party primary of all things. The 2006 IP nominee Chris Pfeifer will face off against frequent local candidate W.D. “Bill” Hamm. I don’t know what this will accomplish, but it’s nice to see the enthusiasm. My friend Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) is running for his second term as the 3A representative and faces a Republican challenge from Wabana Township’s Marv Ott. (DISCLAIMER: I am the chair of Anzelc’s campaign committee and a member of the Itasca County DFL central committee).

Ely Republican Marty Breaker will challenge State Rep. David Dill (DFL-Crane Lake) in the large, rural House District 6A. Breaker ran four years ago and lost; Dill was unopposed last time. All Range DFL incumbents now have at least one opponent. The only Duluth incumbent without a challenger so far is State Rep. Mary Murphy (DFL-Hermantown).

Filing closes Tuesday afternoon. I’ll try to round up the results.
