500? Maybe more … (UPDATED x3)

The word is that a very large crowd is gathering right now over at the site of the Minnesota Steel project north of Nashwauk. Company officials are expecting 500, but I think there could be more. Also, we’ll be getting the new name of the company soon. My money’s on something that combines two “proactive” words in a way that uses “Y” as a vowel. That’s just a guess.

UPDATE:
Today’s take on the groundbreaking from the Star Tribune and MPR.

UPDATE II:
The political ramifications?

“Pawlenty won’t attend McCain rally in Minnesota” (AP)

Why not? He’s up on the Range, trying to hone in on the action. That’s how we know McCain is still a long shot to win Minnesota.

UPDATE III:
Two attendees put the attendance at “about 500,” but the terrain and roadside situation made it hard to say. In any event, it’s damn hard to get 500 people together for anything that doesn’t involve hockey and/or alcohol around here. This was an important day. Any reports from those who were there?

UPDATE IV:
The new name of the operation is Essar Minnesota LLC. Kind of anti-climatic, but there it is. I was hoping for “NinjaSteel 3000.” Additional reports from the site indicate a very positive event in which bankers and miners are equally happy about the same thing. Normally, around here, that is only true of alcohol.

I was there, Aaron. You’re so right about the new name; it’s RhythMinneStessar! Just kidding.

My serious report is that Tom Anzelc was very emotional. I would be, too, if 50 to 75 percent of people mispronounced my name. Except I think he was emotional in a GOOD way. This is a pretty big deal!

Anyway. Nice day for the event. Also, I heard that the cupcakes were delicious. And I got a cool steel water bottle.
