A good debate

Taegan Goddard, one of my favorite nonpartisan political analysts, put together a nice roundup of opinions on the debate last night. In general, its seen as a tie by the professionals, a debate in which both men played to their strengths. Most of the pundits also saw the performance as a good debate, one that showed genuine contrast in opinion and style between the two men who seek the presidency. However, snap polls taken right after the debate show that Obama played best among voters, especially undecided voters. The soundbites used by ABC this morning were cut to favor McCain’s “he doesn’t understand” refrain, but Obama got a couple of good bites, too. NBC called it a tie on the “Today” show. Considering that this one was supposed to be the most difficult for Obama, it would appear McCain has his work cut out for him in the next two debates. I agree with the conventional wisdom that these debates will be very influential for undecided voters, of which there are many.

Thursday night’s VP debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin will be like watching panda bears juggle sticks of nitroglycerin. Ain’t nobody knows what’s gonna happen, but we know it’ll be interesting.

  1. I am not sure I am qualified to say one “won” and the other “lost.” It has been a remarkable election season with the emergence of a woman candidate (who actually had a chance to win), an African American candidate (who likely will become President), a candidate of an earlier generation (war hero and all). I am not sure what America could do for an encore. It makes you proud to be an American.
