Red and Blue history

You’ve probably got an image of the map of red and blue states (ie: Republican and Democratic electoral vote results) in your head from the last three U.S. Presidential elections. But this site, which I found through my favorite electoral vote tracking site Electoral-Vote.com, shows the history of the electoral vote map going back to 1864. It also includes vote totals and links to historical (albeit Wikipedia) articles about the elections. Fascinating for any student or casual observer of U.S. history. 1932, 1936, 1972 and 1984 sure do jar the senses for those used to seeing a divided map. And note how the political parties gradually realigned across the map through the last century. Check it out.

  1. Something that’s interested me is the way Lake County voted between 1932 and 1936.

In ’32, Hoover actually got the most votes in Lake, although his share was less than 50%. FDR scored only in the high 30s. Then in ’36, Lake was FDR’s strongest county in Minnesota. I’m guessing there was a big vote for Norman Thomas in Lake in ’32, given that Debs actually carried it outright in 1912.
