Old School: Range town ponders closing budget gap with Tommy Gun

Here’s a typical political dispute from an Iron Range town, this time Virginia. The city has owned a prohibition-era Tommy Gun since, well, no one knows for sure. Probably came from the feds, we’re told. Police chief suggests selling said Tommy Gun to close the city’s budget gap. (They called them “choppers” sometimes; Bonnie and Clyde, Sonny Corleone and Sean Connery’s character in “The Untouchables” all bought it via these kind of guns). Mayor of town says, hold on, let’s not get hasty, maybe we should build a display case for gun in city hall.

You know, to show our proud history of having unused federal weaponry designed to mow down rum runners. Stop … the tears are welling.

The story originated from the Mesabi Daily News and then crossed on the wire.
