Leaving the Fourth Estate for farm livin’

Reporter Janna Goerdt, who covered the Iron Range for the Duluth News Tribune, is leaving the paper. Her farewell column is in today’s edition. I’ve been reading lots of farewell columns lately. I damn near had to write one myself (until I escaped through the underworld beneath the opera house … the way I always do). But Janna’s was unique. She writes:

Beginning this spring — right now — I’m devoting myself full-time to growing and gathering food. I try to say it that way because telling people you’re going to “be a farmer” today conjures up images of cornfields and combines. I won’t be that kind of farmer; I’m going to be small and diversified, growing everything from tomatoes to turkeys.

Good luck, Janna! She’s a genuine class act. I bailed on full time newspaper work to go to grad school, which seems so much less altruistic and bold.
