Filings for House 5B special election to open Friday, close Tuesday, Jan. 18.

Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie has officially posted the special election for House or Representatives District 5B, the seat vacated today by Rep. Tony Sertich (DFL-Chisholm). Filings open Friday, Jan. 14 and close Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. Information on how to file and the list of candidates who filed so far may be found here. By early next week we’ll know the candidates vying for a rare open seat in the heart of the Mesabi Iron Range.

One program note on how I’ll conduct coverage of this election. As I’ve stated, I have numerous conflicts of interest and will probably know some of the people running. I am remaining neutral during the primary, but have had a few casual conversations with potential candidates. This blog (ie: me) will not endorse. As a resident of the bordering 3A district I won’t even have a vote. Instead, I will open up this blog to all the candidates to share their views and try to cover any forums or other events held to highlight differences among the candidates. This is an important election for the future of the Iron Range, which is my primary interest here.

If you are a candidate for this office, I’ll be in touch. Feel free to contact me if you’d like a nice announcement here at MinnesotaBrown, the Iron Range’s fastest-growing news and culture blog.
