Shelley Robinson first to announce for 5B seat

Shelley Robinson becomes the first candidate to announce for the House District 5B seat being vacated by Rep. Tony Sertich (DFL-Chisholm). Her statement, made both here and on her Facebook page, is this:

Shelley Robinson is announcing her candidacy for MN House District 5B seat vacated by Tony Sertich. Shelley is the Executive Director of Range Center, Inc., a large private nonprofit organization serving adults and children with disabilities across the Iron Range. Shelley’s passion is advocating for better health care, education and workforce development in the state of Minnesota. Job creation and retention on the Iron Range is a top priority for her candidacy. Shelley is running as a DFL candidate.

WDIO and the Hibbing Daily Tribune have both reported the news, among others. I still expect a DFL primary, though Robinson, with a long resume of community work, becomes the early front runner. Her work above, coupled with her experience as both an advocate for underrepresented people and chamber of commerce leader in the central Range area, give her an imposing profile. Further, her pro-life politics and work in the Iron Range faith community might deflate Republican opposition. If she’s challenged seriously in the primary it will be from the left. However, no other candidates have announced.

If you or someone you know are considering a run, click on “Contact” above and let me know. When filings close I’ll be inviting candidates to share op-ed statements about their positions.

Comments

  1. Isn’t she a Republican?

  2. I would classify her as a conservative Democrat. She’s organized with the DFL for many years.

  3. Carly Melin is also going to announce. She is a bright, energetic attorney that lives in Hibbing and works at the Virginia Courthouse. She is a Hibbing native that worked as a Sertich staffer while attending Hamline law school. I am excited about her candidacy! The Iron Range delegation would be well served by a young woman who knows the issues and the law.

  4. We could have a Shelly just like the MN 6th congressional district!

  5. Do you know that Shelley Robinson has won several awards for her work with the Steelworkers Union in Chisholm? I know one was from the Iron Range Labor/Management Association and one from Oberstar.
Believe me, this girl is no republican.

  6. I went to a fundraiser Shelley held at her house for Yvonne Prettner Solon a week before the election. Yvonne and Shelley are good friends – raised lots of money for the DFL.
