Summer tours of active taconite mine are back

If you’ve never seen an active taconite mining operation on northern Minnesota’s Iron Range, you can this summer.

MDC, Hibbing Taconite to provide summer mine tours

CHISHOLM, Minn. – Minnesota Discovery Center, Hibbing Taconite and Shubat Transportation have once again teamed up to provide a bus tour of Hibbing Taconite to the public. The tours, which originate at the Minnesota Discovery Center summer entrance, will be offered Thursdays at 1 p.m. June 23 through August 18, 2011. Cost for the tour is $5 per person, payable at MDC. The tour fee does not include MDC admission. Tour participants should be age 10 or older and be prepared to wear safety helmets and safety glasses. No photographs are allowed while on Hibbing Taconite property. The tour is about 1.5 hours long; tour guides are Hibbing Taconite employees. The tour takes visitors throughout the open pit mine and gives visitors an up-close look at mining equipment in use. Reservations for the tours are recommended and can be made by calling Minnesota Discovery Center at 800-372-6437.

For those who only know the Range vaguely for its bipolar economy and unusual culture, a tour like this will do wonders. See the machines. Observe the earth in motion. Watch how technology has replaced ten workers you don’t see for every one you do. You’ll also see a very sophisticated, professional operation. Check it out.
