Iron Range Maidens roller derby bout set for Saturday

The Iron Range Maidens roller derby team takes to the flat track this Saturday night from the Hodgins-Berado arena in Colerpain … I mean Coleraine, Minnesota.

The Maidens will play the Fargo Furies. The Maiden’s parent organization GRARDA also has a B-team called the Attackonites, who will play a B-team from Duluth’s Harbor City Roller Dames. GRARDA is not an acronym, but rather a sound that is often emitted when grown women skitter across an arena floor like shrapnel from a bomb made of unmitigated violence.

OK, OK! Enough with the one-liners. How about we just cut to press release:

ROLLER DERBY BOUT “SPRING BREAK”
IN COLERAINE SATURDAY MARCH 31, 2012

The Grand Rapids Area Roller Derby Association (GRARDA) is hosting their next derby bout Saturday March 31st, 2012 at Hodgins-Berardo arena in Coleraine, Minnesota. Doors open at 4:30 and roller derby action begins at 5pm.

GRARDA began in 2010 with one team, the Iron Range Maidens, and now includes a “B” team, the Attackonites. Interest in roller derby has been exploding across the nation and northern Minnesota is no different with teams in Bemidji and Duluth as well as GRARDA. Previous bouts in the Grand Rapids area have had audience attendance from 1,200-2,000 people. The mission of GRARDA is to positively represent the greater Grand Rapids area by displaying superior sportsmanship, supporting fellow teammates and giving back to the local community.

On Saturday March 31, 2012 the Attackonites will take on the Harbor City Roller Dames B team from Duluth at 5pm and at 6:45 the Iron Range Maidens play the Fargo Furies. The event has activities for kids as well as adults with a full bar and concessions available.

A portion of the proceeds of this bout will benefit Special Olympics Minnesota and the Itasca Area Cancer Crisis Fund.

Seating is limited and advanced reduced price tickets are available at Reed’s Drug, Clusiau’s Sales & Rental, VidCom Technology and online at brownpapertickets.com.

If you are interested in becoming a player, referee or volunteer for the Iron Range Maidens or the Attackonites, there will be a recruitment party Thursday April 5th from 6-8pm at Hodgins-Berardo arena in Coleraine.
