MPR piece digs deeper into story of Range women in mining

MPR reporters Stephanie Hemphill and Catherine Winter have produced a documentary telling the story of the first women who worked at the taconite plants of the Mesabi Iron Range. Though many have an impression of this story, aided in part by the Nikki Caro-directed film “North Country” starring Charlize Theron, the actual story has a deeper, more tragic and possibly more heroic quality to it.

The mines are now safe places for women to work, but by no means has the issue of gender equity and respect gone away on the Iron Range. Work continues, lead as always by courageous women, long the glue that holds together Range society (for less pay and, often, little fanfare).
