Sudden heat, wind fuel dangerous Northland fires

This morning a fire service helicopter buzzed just above the treetops over our home in rural Itasca County. The incredible swing from a cold, snowy spring to today’s hot, dry, windy conditions has brought a sudden and extreme fire danger. We were under a red flag warning with yesterday’s high winds. Large fires prompted evacuations between Bemidji and Park Rapids (Bemidji Pioneer).

Of course, the biggest local fire was this one in nearby northwestern Wisconsin:

The Germann Road fire started near Gordon, Wisconsin, and has consumed 8,700 acres, evacuated 100 people and may have destroyed a couple dozen homes along with several other structures. An evacuation center was established at the Drummond School.  (WDIO)
