Great Northern Radio Show: In Theory and more

This week I’ll be talking up the featured guests for Saturday’s Great Northern Radio Show, broadcasting live from the Reif Center in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. MinnesotaBrown readers can still get free tickets by calling 218-327-5780 (seating at 4:30, live on Northern Community Radio at 5).

Today, we meet the new Minnesota band In Theory and some of the others appearing in Saturday’s show.

In Theory

In Theory formed just last year as the freshman year project of three music students at the University of Minnesota. Lead singer Iris Kolodji is from Hibbing and has appeared in several editions of the Great Northern Radio Show, including our first show in her hometown when she was still a high school senior. At the U she made friends with two very talented music performance students, violinist Alia Jeraf and cellist Rachelle Smith, both of whom are lovely singers in their own right. They formed a new group IN their THEORY class (get it).

I saw them perform at Zimmy’s this past winter and they’ve been finding places to play around the Twin Cities for several months now. They’ll be making their radio debut on the stage of the Reif Center this Saturday performing an original song Iris wrote for this show and more.

We’ve got some really cool musical surprises in store including one involving Grand Rapids-based virtuosos Sam Miltich on guitar and Mary LaPlant on fiddle. These two are among the best pure musicians in northern Minnesota.

I’m also excited to introduce our Grand Rapids cast of the Great Northern Radio Players, most of whom are veterans of the Grand Rapids Players: Jim Cagle, Bill Adamson, Katie Smith, Sharon Marty Rasmussen, David Martin (“Rev Dave,” to KAXE listeners), along with cameos from Bill Lah and Marty Rice, friends of mine with GNRS experience. We’ll also be hearing from John Latimer of KAXE’s Phenology program, along with Deer River newspaper columnist Chris Quaal Vinson and poet and “The Beat” producer Steve Downing.

Our piano man Nickolai Koivunen is back for this show, along with our regulars Scott Hanson on sound effects with stage direction by his new bride Shelly Hanson and production help from Kelly Gustavsson. We’ve assembled the best audio team we’ve ever had for this show and hope it’s truly something special for the studio and radio audiences alike.

I checked in yesterday and there simply are not many seats left. If you’d like to attend Saturday’s 5-7 p.m. show (for free) call the Reif now at 218-327-5780 to reserve your spot. If they do sell out, and that appears quite possible, there will likely be available rush seating if you arrive at 4:30. We try to seat everyone then so we can start smooth at 5 sharp.
