Tall Ships depart from Duluth, Minnesota

Tall Ships at Bayfront Park, Duluth, MN

The Tall Ships Festival ends today with the tall masted ships set to depart from the Port of Duluth, Minnesota, this morning.

It was a mostly cold and wet Tall Ships weekend, though yesterday was nicer. My family and I made the two-hour trip down to Duluth on Friday.

The crowds were enormous. Organizers predicted more than 250,000 people would visit Tall Ships before the event began. I was skeptical of that, but not after trying to navigate the docks next to the ships.

Our boys got a little freaked out by the rush of people. At one point a privateer yelled out to one of my sons “Smile kid, this is supposed to be fun!” I think if it were just me and my nautically-inclined son Doug we could have spent hours there. Fortunately, the nearby playground let all the boys wind down after watching dad try to get pictures.

The whole thing seemed a lot bigger and more organized than when we visited in 2010. There was a lot more activity outside of the ships — from historical interpreters, to arts and crafts people and more.

Duluth did a great job with this event.

Pride of Baltimore

Historically accurate flag.

Had to snap this shot for two reasons: The amazing sight of all the rigging and the Norwegian flag, for Grandpa Johnson.

Here’s me by the US Brig Niagara. My family was very generous to brave the crowds mostly for my own amusement.

  1. “The important thing is to find out whether the economic impact of new mining is worth the environmental risk. Or whether the companies involved are willing to finance the technology and environmental protections they promise at this early stage. Or whether these companies will finance the projects, period, given the fact that some stakeholders will certainly go to court to stop these projects.”

Too bad Ness and his type have no interest in answering any of those questions or in having any type of discussion at all. Like most others on the far left and the far right, he is interested only in his agenda and belittling anyone who disagrees with him. The one time I had the distinct displeasure of interacting with him, he called me a corporate whore. Very charming.

  2. Fair point, Jake, but you’re under the wrong post. This comment was intended for: http://www.minnesotabrown.com/2013/07/freshman-iron-range-lawmaker-hit-on.html

  3. Aaron — There’s been a fair bit of weirdness with the comments lately (i.e., showing up in seemingly unrelated posts). Plus, the links for “below the jump” and “More” from the Tall Ships post are broken.

Not sure how to diagnose/fix any of this; just a heads up.

  4. I just fixed the link. When I do the “jump” in advance, I have to rely on Blogger’s projected link, and apparently that is not always right.

Comments have been a problem in my template since I rolled it out a few years ago. I’m working on a major site redesign this summer that will dramatically improve the user experience — I hope. Stay tuned.

  5. Hߋwdy would you mind lettinǥ me know which weƄ host you’re using?
