Dave Karr, Sam Miltich to play Grand Rapids tonight

Dave Karr-1 BWJazzman Dave Karr has been making music for more than 60 years, most of that time in Minnesota. Karr, an esteemed saxophonist and composer, got his start in his native New York City, cutting his teeth alongside Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, the guy who every band teacher in the country simultaneously tells trumpet students to play like and not like (speaking from experience).

Sam_MiltichKarr will play in Grand Rapids tonight alongside northern Minnesota’s jazz guitar talent Sam Miltich, a friend and frequent musical guest on my Great Northern Radio Show. They’re doing a benefit for the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids, which is a jewel of an institution in its own right.

Here’s the information:

Come out for an evening of live jazz at MacRostie Art Center. For one night only the galleries will be transformed into a swanky jazz cabaret with music by the duo of Sam Miltich and Dave Karr, wine and hors d’oeuvres, and an artful silent auction.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the event and include wine, food, and music. Contact MacRostie Art Center at 218-326-2697 to purchase.

And here are Karr and Miltich playing a show in 2009:

I heard the folks at Northern Community Radio talking about this event on the Morning Show.
