Minnesota DNR to allow extra fishing on Canisteo Pit

canisteo_pit_smallThe Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will open a liberalized fishing season on the Canisteo Pit near Bovey, Minnesota from Oct. 17 until Dec. 1.

The Canisteo has been rather infamous in recent years as it had flooded the city of Bovey, which required several million dollars in state aid to mitigate. Times have changed. With Magnetation now increasing its scram mining operations on the western Mesabi they have eyes to reopen the Canisteo for new mining after Dec. 1, which is when the state will close the pit to water access. Since the state has been stocking fish in there for several years, this is the equivalent of a “clearance.”

From the DNR:

The pit has been managed by the DNR for lake trout through stocking and natural reproduction. Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, bluegill and cisco are also present in the pit. Liberalized fishing regulations will allow the public to harvest and use these fish before access to the pit is no longer available.

Under liberalized fishing regulations, residents may take fish without any bag or size limits, in any manner except by use of seines, hoop nets, fyke nets, and explosives; and any fish taken are for personal use only, except rough fish which may be sold. People may use multiple lines, gill nets, dip nets or spearing to take fish.

An informational meeting has been scheduled for Monday, Oct. 14 at the Mount Itasca ski chalet, located at 200 Mount Itasca Drive, Coleraine, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to answer any questions about liberalized fishing regulations. DNR fisheries staff, DNR conservation officers and Magnetation representatives will be at the meeting.
