KARE reports on Glencore involvement in PolyMet

Iron Range newsKARE 11 filed this report about the PolyMet nonferrous mining project in northern Minnesota. Though it was already well known to those familiar with the project, the largest single owner of PolyMet (about 30 percent) is Glencore, an international company with mining interests all over the world. KARE 11 explored Glencore involvement in PolyMet in this recent story.

Glencore has drawn attention after it named former BP executive Tony Hayward as chair of its board. Hayward drew international infamy as head of the oil company during its major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Though Glencore is not the majority owner of PolyMet, its ownership stake gives it a seat on PolyMet’s board and it could be a bigger player in financing new sulfide mining in the Lake Superior watershed should the project be permitted.

Right now, we continue to wait for the federal government to release PolyMet’s environmental impact statement, a key document that will determine whether the EPA and other agencies issue permits.
