Great Northern Radio Show

The Great Northern Radio Show is music, stories and comedy sharing the experience of modern life off the beaten path.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, I bring my Great Northern Radio Show to the small farming community of Fosston, Minnesota, for our annual winter show. Our program brings music, comedy and storytelling to unique locations around northern Minnesota, exploring what it means to live a modern life off the beaten path. Each show is planned around the unique location and people of the place where we broadcast. This show will be a small, intimate affair on the stage of the Fosston Library Arts Center.

This week I’ll be showcasing the talent appearing in this show, starting today with our headliner: Reina del Cid and the Cidizens. Reina del Cid is a Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter originally from Fargo, North Dakota. She’s been in residence at the Amsterdam Bar and Grill in St. Paul Monday nights for the last year and is widely considered a rising talent in the growing Minnesota music scene. We’re pretty excited that we got her and her band to come to Fosston.

The Star Tribune describes Reina del Cid as the “way-more-talented-than-you girl next door,” and that’s really what she brings. She’s very pleasant, writes tight songs that are relatable, fun and yet soulful, plays a mean guitar and basically makes you wonder how it is someone like her exists, being nice and talented at the same time with the same veracity. It’s not fair. Life isn’t fair. The real winners in this case are radio listeners and the lucky souls who can get into our studio audience.

The show broadcasts 5-7 p.m. on Northern Community Radio. Free tickets are available for a studio audience of about 150 people. Call 218-326-1234 to reserve your tickets. Audience must be seated by 4:30 p.m. While we pride ourselves on the end product — a radio show — the live experience is one people seem to enjoy quite a bit.

Here’s Reina del Cid doing a solo song “Library Girl” that I’m sharing for reasons that should be obvious to those who know me.
