Author Kate Ingrid Paul has a new book “Memoirs from Down in the Boondocks: A Spiritual Journey through Poem and Short Story.”

Kate Ingrid Paul is a fellow Sax-Zim Bog spawn who, like me, found the experience worth writing about. She’s got a new book out entitled “Memoirs from Down in the Boondocks: A Spiritual Journey through Poem and Short Story.”

Paul was featured in last Sunday’s Hibbing Daily Tribune. Here’s an excerpt from her talk with Tony Potter:

“When we grow up in a place, especially such a beautiful place, we can’t help but develop deep roots,” she said. “I believe my own roots on the Iron Range are not unlike those that others have here. I’ve learned a lot throughout my life from my connection with this place, and we are all not as different as outer appearances and inner beliefs would have us think.”

Paul attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) and then graduate school for wildlife biology in Idaho. After school, she moved back to Minnesota to live in the Twin Cities for several years and returned to the Iron Range after a 17-year absence.

“I wanted to pursue my dream of living closer to the land and living a life more in tune to my passions,” she said.
Paul worked for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in Hibbing for several years, but now operates an organic Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm, owl forest farm and works as an energy healing practitioner at the Pebble Spa.

“I’ve lived in many different places, but none are closer to my heart than the forested land I grew up on and the genuine people I know from the Iron Range,” she said.

Moving back to the Iron Range wasn’t just a physical journey either.

“It was a spiritual one as well,” she said, noting that all of the stories and poetry in the book were written since moving back.
Paul said the experiences she had growing up on the Iron Range shaped her life journey and are reflected in the writings in this book.

“My connection with the land I grew up on and the lessons I learned through that connection resonate throughout the book,” she said.

She’ll be doing a reading at the Lyric Center for the Arts in Virginia, Minnesota, on Monday evening. The Lyric Center for the Arts in Virginia, Minnesota just cancelled Paul’s Monday night reading on account of the dangerous cold conditions forecast for that day. I expect the event will be rescheduled at some point.

UPDATE: Kate Ingrid Paul’s reading and book signing have been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 3 at the Lyric Center for the Arts.

Kate Ingrid Paul, author of “Memoirs from Down in the Boondocks: A Spiritual Journey through Poem and Short Story”, will read from this new work and hold a book signing on Monday, January 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the First Stage of the Lyric Center for the Arts, 514 Chestnut Street, Virginia.
