Northern Minnesota’s culture sprang from dozens of groups of immigrants building blue collar cities on Ojibwa land little more than 100 years ago. Having fun in the middle of the summer was one of the few things everyone could agree on, and showing patriotism for our common land is one of the central shared values that endures on the Iron Range today.

Here is my 2014 Iron Range Fourth of July listing for parades, fireworks displays and street dances centered in the days before and after Independence Day. Most of these towns schedule a wide variety of other events, including races, kids’ activities and live music, too numerous to list here. You will see links where they are available. This Iron Range Fourth of July schedule is a start, for people planning to catch several celebrations or wondering what fits into family schedules on a trip to the Iron Range.

Ellsburg Township (Melrude) Parade and centennial celebration Saturday, July 5 starting at noon. Small, but a great vibe; locals and ‘cabin people’ all having a good time. I may possibly be wearing a mer-gnome costume on a float. Yes, a mermaid with a pointy hat and beard.
