UPDATE: Grand Rapids, MN is also on the list of new locations.

A Hinckley, Minn., couple is developing seven new Dunkin’ Donuts locations in Northern Minnesota, including Duluth, Hibbing and Brainerd. That according to this Paul Walsh article in today’s Star Tribune.

[New franchisee Brian] Weidendorf said the Duluth locale will be in a remodeled site, while the others will be built “from the ground up” in Brainerd, Hibbing, on Tower Avenue in Superior, Wis., and other spots he did not specify.

Why are the Weidendorfs building Dunkin’ Donuts stores? They like donuts. Why will people go there, despite what the doctor said? They like donuts. This is simple. People I’ve talked to today are very excited.

The Walsh article points out that this would put Greater Minnesota in line to get Dunkin’ Donuts franchises before the Twin Cities. The brand is apparently meeting with interested developers in the metro area.

Just over the border in Canada, Robin’s Donuts and Tim Horton’s are behemoths in the coffee/pastry trade. It’s always seemed logical that similar stores would have success in Minnesota, where parkas conceal all manner of sin. That being said, a donut shop in Grand Rapids opened and closed in just a couple years this decade. It’s tricky business. The question you have to ask is “Are you the donut, or are you the hole?”
