The longest nights of winter will be this weekend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live it up in a warm tropical environment right here on Northern Minnesota’s Iron Range.

The Friends of the Greenhouse will be hosting their second annual Celebration of the Winter Solstice this Saturday, Dec. 20, at noon at the Olcott Park Botanical Gardens in Virginia, Minnesota. The event features live music by classical guitarist Steve Phillips and the rocking band Four Horse Johnson, food, drinks, hot cocoa, and a view of actual plant life in the dead of winter. Tickets are $3, $2 for members and free for those 12 and younger.

Says the poster:

Traditionally, many cultures organized feasts, festivals, holidays, and celebrations around the winter solstice.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the solstice occurs during the coldest season of the year. Although winter was regarded as the season of dormancy, darkness and cold, the coming of lighter days after the winter solstice brought on a more festive mood. To many people, this return of the light was a reason to celebrate that nature’s cycle was continuing.

Friends of the Greenhouse would be delighted if you joined them for an afternoon of fellowship and good tidings with music and drinks at the historic Olcott Park Greenhouse.

Sounds like a fun time. You could catch this and the free “The Night Before Christmas” dance performance in Hibbing that night and have quite the day’s worth of affordable entertainment.
