Hibbing among medical cannabis dispensary sites

Minnesota politicsWhen Gov. Mark Dayton signed a medical marijuana bill into law after last year’s legislative session, it was not without controversy. Not only does a step toward more lenient cannabis laws ruffle some conservatives and law enforcement groups, but many legalization advocates found the bill far too restrictive to be useful.

Nevertheless, many families are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to access medicine that doctors believe will help certain chronic illnesses and disorders.

The story took a local turn this week as the Minnesota Department of Health announced the sites of two growing and processing facilities and eight dispensaries (one for each Congressional District). Northern Minnesota’s dispensary will be located in Hibbing.

Though medical cannabis will be available to eligible patients in July 2015, the dispensaries won’t be open until July 1, 2016 — more than 18 months from now.
