Paul Metsa to star in musical based on trippy autobiography

“Blue Guitar Highway” was the well-reviewed memoir of Minnesota musician and Iron Range native Paul Metsa.

One of the more successful musicians to emerge from the Iron Range later in the 20th Century was Paul Metsa, a singer-songwriter who certainly fits in the mold of the Range’s somewhat-more-successful star, Bob Dylan, crossed with a bit of Bruce Springsteen to boot.

Metsa, who is from the Range city of Virginia, has lived and played music in the Twin Cities for decades. His heartfelt 2011 autobiography “Blue Guitar Highway” got favorable reviews for his tale of growing up on the Iron Range, living hard times, recovering from addiction and finding a musical voice. It’s a non-sequetial book, kind of a trippy read, and now … it’s a musical.

MinnPost published an interesting Pamela Espeland interview with Metsa this week. In it, Metsa explains his show, which will play two nights only this upcoming Friday, Dec. 26, and Saturday, Dec. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Phoenix Theater in Uptown Minneapolis. Find out more at the MinnPost story.

For now this is a one-time deal, but if it goes well Metsa said he might take the show on the road. If a musical about the Range, rock ‘n’ roll, drug addiction and forgetting the 1970s can’t succeed, I’ve truly lost faith in the genre.
