A Northern Minnesota high school art teacher was crowned Miss Minnesota last Saturday and will now use her campaign for the Miss America crown to highlight education issues.

Rachel Latuff is the art teacher at North Woods High School serving Cook and Orr. You can catch the whole story in this Tom Klein article from the hometown Timberjay newspaper, which includes the following quote:

“Winning this title celebrates the role teachers play in the lives of children,” said Latuff. “I want this crown to symbolize an appreciation for teachers across the state of Minnesota and empower public education in a positive way. Being Miss Minnesota is a platform to share my message on a larger scale.”

“I am a teacher who role-models what I preach. It’s important to set an example that nobody can define who you are, only yourself and your ambition,” she continued. “I hope it inspires my students to be whatever they want and go for their dreams.”

Latuff, 24, is a Hastings native, but has taught at North Woods for a year and plans to include her Northern Minnesota students in some of her charity projects, including an Empty Bowl fundraiser, during the upcoming school year as she prepares for the Miss America pageant on Sept. 13 in Atlantic City, N.J.

From Klein’s story:

The most important thing, she said, is to remain true to herself. “At the end of the day, I’m always Ms. Latuff and that’s what made me Miss Minnesota. I can never lose sight of my teaching philosophies, talents and creative personality,” Latuff said. “Keeping that in mind, staying humble and thankful for the Miss Minnesota Scholarship Program is a must.”

As a teacher, now seems like a good time to reassure my students that they will not see ME in a swimsuit on TV anytime soon. But good luck to Miss Latuff!
