Season 3 of ‘Fargo’ headed for Eden Valley, MN

Season 3 of the critically-acclaimed “Fargo” on FX will begin filming in Canada in January. This week, the show announced most of its cast.

I reviewed the first two seasons of “Fargo” here at MinnesotaBrown.com, providing a uniquely rural Minnesota-centric point of view. The reviews were quite popular during Season 1, but traffic fell back to earth in Season 2.

I attributed the drop off to Minnesota Public Radio’s full court press on “Fargo,” including a dedicated episodic podcast complete with bantering “they might be millennial” public radio voices.

So looking ahead to Season 3, will I continue? I mean, why bother? The big shots down in the Twin Cities seem to have it all under control, right?

But ask yourself this: Where do you want your hyper-regional self-important overly nit-picky “Fargo” reviews coming from?

Do you want them from some sleek national media organization harvesting page views using their California connections to get the show’s stars to comment?

Or do you want those reviews from just some guy holed up in a house in the woods much further North? Somewhere near where the show takes place. Some guy with nothing left to lose.

So, yeah, I’m doing this again. For free. Like a psycho. I am that guy.

Showrunner Noah Hawley has released some clues on what Season 3 will bring. The Hollywood Reporter offered details.

We know the show takes place in 2010, after the events of the first season. We know that one of the lead characters is Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coons of “Gone Girl”), the recently divorced police chief of Eden Valley, Minnesota — an actual small town near St. Cloud. She’s got a deputy named Donny Mashman (comedian Jim Gaffigan) who, I would venture, stands to serve some comic relief.

The male leads include twin brothers, Emmit and Ray Stussy (both portrayed by “Obi Wan” Ewen McGregor of the “Star Wars” prequels). Emmit — the “Parking Lot King of Minnesota” is successful; Ray, not so much. Hence some dramatic brotherly tension.

Other characters:

  • Nikki Swango, a recent parolee with a passion for the game of bridge (Mary Elizabeth Winstead of “10 Cloverfield Lane”)
  • V.M. Vargus, Emmit’s unwanted business associate (David Thewlis, Remus Lupin in the “Harry Potter” movie series)
  • Sy Feltz, Emmit’s parking lot lieutenant (Michael Stuhlbarg of “Boardwalk Empire”)
  • Maurice LeFay, a stoner with a shady background (Scoot McNairy of “Halt and Catch Fire” and “12 Years a Slave”)
  • Moe Dammick, Sheriff of Meeker County (Shea Whigham, also of “Boardwalk Empire”)
  • Dr. Homer Gilruth, a scientist (Karan Soni of “Deadpool”)
  • Howard Zimmerman, a wheeler-dealer (Fred Melamed of “Casual” and “Lady Dynamite”)
  • Thaddeus Mobley, a sci-fi author (Thomas Mann, “Me, Earl and the Dying Girl”)

With filming just starting in January, it’s not certain when the Season 3 of “Fargo” will air. Anytime from late spring to fall seems possible.
