In Duluth, spring returns with national champs and international shipping

After a temporary setback with last week’s winter storm, spring seems to have finally arrived … again … in Northern Minnesota.

One sure sign includes the arrival of the first “saltie” into the Port of Duluth-Superior

The Maltese-flagged Maria G arrived in the Port of Duluth to take on a load of grain early this morning. She became the first international ocean-going ship of the 2019 shipping season. That means the Great Lakes, recently choked with ice, are now completely open for ships of all kinds.

Another sign of spring is the successful conclusion of the college hockey season. Once again, the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs won the NCAA national college hockey championship over the weekend, defeating the University of Massachusetts.

It was a nearly flawless game by UMD, a 3-0 win that saw three periods of dominant play.

UM-Duluth will host a celebration for its back-to-back hockey champions. The event will take place 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Romano Gymnasium.

Slow to come, signs of spring arrive just the same.
