The fourth in my series of columns about mental health issues in Minnesota is out now.
One of my biggest goals in this series was to convey that there is hope for those facing mental illness. There is widespread agreement that effective treatments exist for those suffering most forms of mental illness. The problem is that the people who want to provide the care often can’t, and the people who need the care often go without.
One issue is money, of course, especially within our complicated and profit-motivated American health system. We must also look at how mental health issues are handled in their frequent landing place: the emergency room.
Read “For rural patients, the mental health system can’t keep up with crisis,” in the Sunday, June 29, 2025 edition of the Minnesota Star Tribune.
I’ve got a couple more entries in mind for this series, which will likely conclude in July.
Aaron J. Brown is a columnist and member of the editorial board for the Minnesota Star Tribune. His new book about Hibbing Mayor Victor Power and his momentous fight against the world’s largest corporation will be out soon.
