My (friendly) Union march to Atlanta

I’m traveling into the heart of the Confederacy today. I am very excited to spend the next few days as arm candy for my more successful blogging wife and to take in the sights and sounds of Atlanta, Georgia.

This will be the furthest south I’ve ever gone. When I was 11 my grandparents took me to see my great-grandmother in southern Pennsylvania. I asked to see some new states so we drove through the skinny part of Maryland, the skinny part of West Virginia and just over the border of Virginia. I asked them to drive until we saw a Confederate flag. That happened almost immediately, so I can’t say I’ve seen much of the South.

As Christina attends a conference I’ll be exploring the sights and sounds of Atlanta. I’ll be a little out of my element, both as a rustic using public transportation again and in a place where my not-so-subtle Minnesota accent will identify me. Additionally, my personal “thrill of victory, agony of defeat” moments in my sporting memory include the ’91 Twins beating the Braves and the ’98 Vikings losing a NFC championship heartbreaker to the Falcons the night before I had to drive eight hours back to college. I think I am at peace with this now, finally.

I don’t think I’ll blog much until the weekend, but I’ll keep an active record at my Twitter feed, @minnesotabrown, and my Facebook page.
