Just when things were looking up …

In class Monday I was telling my students how important it was to get out to the caucuses Tuesday night. I wasn’t pitching for my candidate, just telling them that they should go to the party caucus of their choice to have a say in who the major party presidential nominees would be in this very important election. Here is a composite sketch of the conversation in one group.

ME: … so the Republicans will be meeting at the college and the Democrats will be meeting over at the Lincoln.

STUDENT: Is this for extra credit?

ME: I can’t give you extra credit to participate in democracy.

STUDENT: So we’re supposed to do this for, like, no reason.

ME: You’re supposed to do this to breathe life into our democracy.

STUDENT: How many points is that worth?

Ah, sometimes it’s good to know that while hope may never die in America, neither will apathy.

For the rest of us in Minnesota, caucus with the political party of your choice Tuesday night. For locations in your town or township, check out www.dfl.org (Democrats) or www.mngop.org (Republicans).

  1. All of those students get an F. Not in your class, but in life, which means they get to work at a gas station in Buhl until they die.
