From Farmers’ Day to the week ahead

You probably know I write this blog from the Iron Range, a labor bastion known for its mining. Labor Day is, thus, a suitably big deal on the Range. Nevertheless, on the western Mesabi Range, where I live, the seemingly odd local tradition of Bovey Farmers’ Day takes place on Labor Day.

We attended Farmers’ Day with the all three kids for the first time. We watched the Shriners do their motorcycle tricks at the beginning. That was so cool. I realized that this was the first time I’d seen them do that. We didn’t have parades in the Zim and Cherry area where I grew up and when I turned 16 virtually every parade I attended was as a participant, usually for a political cause. Today, I was a civilian. Good times. The kid of ours with a full set of teeth got LITERALLY three and half pounds of candy. Seriously, we weighed it.

The week ahead should bring some intrigue. I will be running (I think) a series of blog posts starting (I hope) later today that features the five DFL candidates running in the House 7B primary down in West Duluth. So far, participation is a little light and I hope to rectify that soon. It would appear that the two front runners, Marsh Stenersen and Roger Reinert, are participating, however; so, as Bill Murray would say in “Caddyshack,” at least I got that goin’ for me. I will do more detailed multi-party analysis of each race around the area during the general election, but for right now 7B provides the most interesting primary race in northern Minnesota.

I also have tidbits about the world of writing in the Northland and possible updates on several Iron Range news stories. That is, unless I am smothered by my burgeoning stack of ungraded papers. To the desk!
