From nursing home to … ‘man-camp?’

You might remember me writing about the closure of Golden Crest nursing home in Hibbing last fall. Not much has changed in the landscape of nursing home policy and funding issues, but the status of the building caught my eye this past weekend. It was advertised in the Hibbing Daily Tribune at a bargain list price of $199,000 (this is a huge three story facility on First Avenue). Among the potential uses of the building was listed “man-camp.”

What the hell? Man-camp? Paging the zoning department. This town won’t abide a new sewer plant but the downtown “man-camp” is OK? Those transients better be pooping in Chisholm.

  1. What exactly *is* a man camp?

    I found these:
    http://www.pointmancampmeeting.com/
    http://bigboysmenscamp.com/

and a work of fiction here:
    http://www.bookreporter.com/reviews2/1400062144.asp

This latter describes man camp as having a mission to: teach sissy city men how to be men.

That last part I can get about Hibbing. But the camps online seem to be mostly located in the woods. Could the camp here be teaching men how to be manly by playing sports such as bocce, hanging out in Iron Range bars, and wearing black t-shirts, blue jeans and work boots all day long?

    Just wondering….

  2. Hmmmm, it begs the questions of what has happened to the 30+ nursing homes in MN that have closed over the last several years, as well as what will happen to the schools in Cook, Orr, Tower, Cotton, Virginia, etc. of all consolidations and new schools take place.

  3. Man camp is where men get together to do guy things all they want for a designated period of time without their women-folk along. It can be father-son or just friends, sometimes oriented to a church or club group. It’s an excuse to get away from the everyday guy stuff they do. You know, special different guy stuff… I wonder if it is anything like band camp?

this one time… at man camp…

  5. Lots of women go to “quilt camp” aka “quilting retreat.” So maybe this is similar. Yes, we really do sew about 12 hours a day there. Also eat and talk. And eat.

  6. So, if it’s like a quilt camp for men, we get to eat, drink, fart and play cards with no women around to disappove? Count me in!

Oh, wait. We already do all that without having to go to “man camp.” It’s called “deer camp.” I guess the Iron Range *is* the perfect place for a man camp!
