Northern Lights Music Festival in full swing

Bizet’s “Carmen” will be the showcase performance of this year’s Northern Lights Music Festival, which brings classical music and opera to Iron Range cities like Aurora, Ely, Virginia, Chisholm and Ely.

“You can’t love the opera if you never see it.”

That’s what Aurora native, concert pianist, and founder of the Northern Lights Music Festival Veda Zupancic told me when I interviewed her this week for my Sunday column.

Indeed, the Northern Lights Music Festival combines an educational component for beginning and advanced music students and a blend of professional and community performances, all with the goal of introducing one of the Iron Range’s most prized traditions — classical music — to a new generation of Iron Rangers.
