Air Force Brass to play the Range on Sunday

The Lyric Center for the Arts in the Iron Range city of Virginia, Minnesota, is sponsoring a free concert by the United States Airlifter Brass this Sunday, Aug. 17, at 3 p.m. at the Olcott Park bandstand.

I’ve seen this group play before and I can’t imagine a more fitting sound to hear in a park as another Iron Range summer flitters toward the school year and fall. If you’re in the area, do check it out.

I played second trumpet in a small Range high school band. At one point this group came to my school to play a concert. We were told that if we were really good at our instruments we could join the Air Force just to play music. I got the feeling, however, that I joined the Air Force to play music I’d end up oiling B-29 landing gear somewhere in Splurguckistan.
