UPDATE: The panel discussion and concert by Adam Levy are being postponed due to the winter storm today. They will be rescheduled.

Adam Levy, front man for the Honeydogs, will do two special events today with Northern Community Radio in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Both are deeply personal.

From the NCR release:

Adam Levy’s new solo release “Naubinway” is a tribute to his son Daniel who died by suicide after battling mental illness. Adam will not only be performing in concert at Itasca Community College, he’ll be part of a panel discussion with KAXE/KBXE’s John Bauer on the stigma of mental illness and suicide.

Adam Levy’s son battled mental illness from age 16 when he was diagnosed as bipolar. What followed was depression, delusional episodes, hospital visits and a possible diagnosis of schizophrenia. Adam tried to get his son in a full-time care facility, but as he said, “the bureaucracy about this sort of care is frustrating”. In the Minneapolis Star Tribune Adam said, “Daniel’s story is something of a cautionary tale. There isn’t a happy ending, but it’s been helpful to me and to other people, I think, to process it through music.”

Grand Rapids native John Bauer is heading up this event that is more than a concert experience. John’s daughter Megan died by suicide in 2013 and in the last year he and the MacRostie Art Center have embarked on “What’s Left” a traveling art exhibit that aims to break the stigma of mental illness and suicide. John has worked with arts organizations, schools, young people and survivors to create more than just an exhibit – it’s become a movement of people who want to see change in our society and our mental health systems.

KAXE/KBXE is hosting Adam Levy in partnership with Itasca Community College and will present a free panel discussion with music at 11 a.m. at Chucker Auditorium at Itasca Community College on March 16. That night at 6 there will be a social hour with the Boreal Brewers of Grand Rapids followed by a concert with Adam Levy at 7. Tickets are $10 for the concert. Students are free.
