Building independent public media on the Iron Range

I was in studio for this week’s “Between You and Me” at KAXE in Grand Rapids this morning and I’ll be back there next Saturday guest hosting a show about “The Future.” I have done odd jobs and special projects for KAXE over the past few years, which is why I’m now putting out the call for some people interested in offering input.

KAXE broadcasts a clear signal over a vast portion of northern Minnesota, including Grand Rapids, Bemidji, Brainerd and the Iron Range … all the way up to Ely. It’s also the only station around with an independent programming division, locally programmed music and local news. While the station enjoys deep support from most of its communities it continues to lag in support from my native Iron Range on the eastern portion of KAXE’s listening area. Fact is, many Rangers just don’t know what KAXE is or what it does that’s so different from other radio stations.

There will be two focus group gatherings in September, one in Hibbing and one in Virginia. Dinner will be provided; all you have to do is provide your input on programming you’d like to hear and what you think could be done to serve the Range better. Familiarity with KAXE is not required. In fact, they’d like to know what non-listeners think, too. Contact me on my e-mail in the top right corner of the blog or KAXE’s Scott Hall at 218-326-1234 or shall@kaxe.org.
