Obama more like ‘us’ than Cokie and Steve Roberts

Today, the Hibbing Daily Tribune ran a syndicated column by Cokie and Steve Roberts that bears the headline “Is Obama one of us? We’re not sure.” If the question is, is Obama an overrated national pundit thriving off of insider status, I suppose the answer would have to be “no.” But I still have no idea why so many national writers are buying into the notion that Obama who grew up of very modest means with a single mom, is suddenly some elitist because he went to college and got a better job. When Iron Range kids do that we celebrate them and, often, end up voting for them in some capacity.

  1. Furthermore, if by “one of us,” we mean middle-class or working-class, we may as well keep dreaming. The day we have a working-class president will be the day we have strict public financing for elections.
