Tonight … Tonight!

The brawl in the Hall … The 7B Seven Smackdown … West Side Gory!

Call it what you will, the first forum of the hotly contested West Duluth House District 7B primary/open general election race is tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the Duluth City Council chambers. While actual physical confrontation is unlikely, I expect many subtly worded statements indicating core differences between the candidates. 2 D Xtreme!!!

Sorry, I’ve covered these before. They’re usually only interesting to the candidates, their supporters and a handful of super-motivated voters. But this time will be different, I can feel it.
This race features a five-way DFL primary that will send a new DFL candidate against an unopposed Republican and IP member. All the candidates are schedule to appear at tonight’s Progressive Minnesota forum. I’ve said before that Duluth city councilor Roger Reinert and labor official Marsh Stenersen appear to be the frontrunners. They’ll be sparring tonight, I’m sure. The other DFLers: UMD student John Derbis, community activist Brandon Clokey and local optometrist Dr. Dan Maryland are running long shot, outside candidacies. This is their chance to get noticed before it’s too late.

Meantime, Republican Allan Kehr and IP candidate Jay Coles will be looking to establish some kind of alternative voice in a district that is generally a heavy DFL stronghold. This seat came open when Rep. Mike Jaros (DFL-Duluth) retired unexpectedly a couple months ago.

Most readers know I operate from deep in the wilderness of Itasca County up on the Iron Range, entering towns only to procure beer, money and votes for like-minded candidates. I won’t be in Duluth tonight, so please use the comments to offer your thoughts about the forum. I’ll share the media coverage tomorrow.
