Second debate: different format, same dynamic

My favorite nonpartisan aggregate of political news and views, Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire, is keeping track of the reaction to tonight’s presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. His initial take was to declare an Obama victory.

My take was the McCain did better than in the previous debate, clearly comfortable with the format of the town hall meeting, but that the fundamental factors driving the poll numbers toward Obama did not change. Obama did a good job of making his policies more personal. Talking about his mom’s battle with cancer and connecting it to the problems many Americans face when it comes to health care coverage is probably his winning line.
