Thank you, Virginia

I’m back from today’s “Overburden: Modern Life on the Iron Range” book signing at Woodward’s in Virginia, Minn. I didn’t know what to expect today and was pleasantly surprised. We had a couple dozen folks show up for signed books and plenty of pre-orders to sign as well. I left a healthy stock of signed books behind at Woodwards so you can go there if you’re interested in giving the perfect Christmas gift for anyone on the Range, from the Range, coming to the Range or mystified by the Range.

Highlights:

  • I met a man who worked for my great-grandfather and with my grandfather in the underground mines at Leonidas on the Mesabi Iron Range.
  • I met a descendant of the Merritt family, the first family to mine the Mesabi Iron Range.
  • The Thunderbird Mall hired an accordion player to play Christmas music around the concourse. Santa Claus was also on duty. Every few minutes the accordion player would pass and then, minutes later Santa would ho-ho-ho on by. Ken, the accordion player, came back after his shift and bought a book. Santa Claus stiffed me. Personally, I believe in Ken.
  • Grandma showed up and gave me some pasties, the Cornish butter crust meat pies of my people.

What a day! Thank you, Virginia. Next up: Hibbing Community College at 11 a.m. Monday for a brown bag lunch discussion and book signing.
