Mitchell Bridge to be toppled this summer

On the subject of roads, we learn today in the Hibbing Daily Tribune that the Range-famous Mitchell Bridge between Hibbing and Chisholm will be removed this summer thanks to MNDOT and federal stimulus money. The rough looking landmark will be replaced by new infrastructure that will actually route the Mesabi Trail underneath the new highway. A bike tunnel! Sweet.

Anyone who knows the Mitchell Bridge knows that crossing it is a white knuckle experience whenever the bridge encounters rain, snow or, well, cars.

  1. If only they were forward looking enough to straighten that bridge out and route 169 east around the Godfrey Reserve and join back up near Buhl. Then we would have the highway out of the way of the mining companies, off the tops of hazardous underground mines, and in a place that actually makes sense.

  2. True, Steve. I have thought the same… but then I wouldn’t get to drive by the Iron World gorge each day. I’m just glad that bridge is going bye-bye.

  3. Rerouting a highway is a long process that requires extensive planning, research of environmental and economic considerations, and public involvement. Don’t forget the millions of dollars on top of that. It doesn’t happen overnight. It cannot happen in a couple of months. It usually can’t even happen over a couple of years.
