‘Overburden’ road show makes final Twin Cities stops Thursday and Friday

I’ll be appearing at the Har-Mar Mall Barnes and Noble in Roseville tonight for a 7 p.m. reading and signing of my book “Overburden: Modern Life on the Iron Range.” Recently this book won the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award. On Friday, I’ll be doing a signing at Common Good Books in St. Paul at 1 p.m.

By the by, even though they call these things “readings” that’s not how I treat them. I am down to about 25 percent “reading” (and only my radio friendly material) and about 75 percent freewheeling jam session. I am a speech teacher by trade and, as such, own a special responsibility not to clobber the audience with boredom sticks.

What do I talk about? The Iron Range, history, politics, guns, beer, fire, woodland creatures, dead reptiles, dead amphibians, live dogs, dead dogs, live iron mines, dead iron mines, going to the dump, dumping on the go and also the theater. And blogs. Oh, and how all this matters to all of Minnesota, the U.S. and the world even if you’ve never heard of the Iron Range. That too.

Free books for gubernatorial candidates! Oh wait, who am I kidding? I’d bankrupt my publisher.
