Onward to America’s better nature

Osama bin Laden is dead. This morning I remember my feelings behind the editor’s desk of a small Iron Range afternoon daily putting together the front page on Sept. 11, 2001. Each minute brought more horror. Each revision to the page better reflected the long, ugly period in our history that would follow. Today, I do not feel joy so much as closure. Our hard times are not over, but we are making progress.

I also think of the high school students I coached in the mid-2000s, how they were 11 or 12 when the attacks happened and how much 9/11 changed their world, shaped their view of politics and culture. One of those students, Matt Nelson, now a very talented writer in college, articulates his feelings today. Again, closure.

In Proverbs it says:

“When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, And when the wicked perish, there is joyful shouting.” (Proverbs 11:10)

“Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; or the LORD will see it and be displeased, And turn His anger away from him.” (Proverbs 24:17-18)

Onward, to America’s better nature and the continued perseverance of good over evil.
