The hotbed in legislative battlegrounds this year is the new Senate District 5 and House Districts 5A and 5B in Itasca, Cass and Beltrami counties. Redistricting paired three DFL incumbents with three GOP incumbents here. Today, the DFL made its endorsements at the Cohasset Community Center.
For Senate, the DFL unanimously endorsed incumbent Sen. Tom Saxhaug (DFL-Grand Rapids). For House 5A, Rep. John Persell (DFL-Bemidji) was unanimously endorsed.
There was a contested endorsement in the new House District 5B, a new district combing parts of four previous districts. Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL-Balsam Township) faced Joe Gould, who had announced a campaign for House prior to redistricting. Though Gould brought a spirited campaign to the convention hall, Anzelc won handily with a 106-46 victory. Both announced they would abide by the endorsement and appeared together on stage afterward.
