Meyer files for DFL primary in House 6B seat

Dave Meyer, an Aurora construction worker active in Laborer’s Union Local 1097, has filed to run in the DFL primary to replace Rep. Tom Rukavina (DFL-Virginia) in one of the Iron Range’s hottest contests of 2012.

“I’m going to fight to keep jobs here, to keep them from heading south,” said Meyer.

Infrastructure investments top Meyer’s priority list, as they improve the quality of life in the area and keep people working, he said.

Meyer ran unsuccessfully for Aurora city council two years ago. He also spent 16 years as a firefighter for the DNR along with his 18 years as a construction worker.

“I’ve always been interested in politics,” said Meyer. “I like to see what the people want and how to get it for them.”

Meyer joins labor organizer Jason Metsa and AEOA project manager Lorrie Janatopoulos in the District 6B DFL primary. Metsa and Janatopoulos went five ballots at last weekend’s DFL endorsing convention, which ended without either candidate achieving the 60 percent necessary to win the party’s blessing. That means a contested primary in the heart of the Mesabi Iron Range, a longstanding DFL bastion.

“Right now, I’m the underdog,” said Meyer.
