June 29 hot date for NoMinn music (make the right choice)

So, everybody’s favorite northern Minnesota band Trampled By Turtles will be co-headlining at Bayfront Festival Park on June 29 with Atmosphere, a popular sort of lyric hip-hop group that hipsters seem to like. This is a pretty big deal for a certain sort of demographic, a demographic that includes myself.

Here’s the problem. On June 29, I’ll be up Highway 2 from there hosting the Great Northern Radio Show live from the Reif Center in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. We’ll be doing original music, comedy and more, all beaming out on the magic broadcast waves of Northern Community Radio. It’s our biggest show ever, with Actual Wolf, the Roe Family Singers, In Theory and scads of talented people from that area.

I’m not sure what tickets to Bayfront are going for, but I assure you they are way too expensive. Our tickets are free if you reserve in advance and you get to see a full variety show just as appealing as the one in Duluth.

I don’t know what the weather will be like on June 29, but it will probably rain. When it rains Bayfront Park turns into a muddy, sucking bog where people go missing and emerge years later when passing dogs dig up their frost-bleached bones. The Reif Center is a world class theater with comfortable, climate-controlled seating.

Lemme guess. TBT is going to go all plinky, plinky, plinky and the guy with the beard will be all eeee-EEE-eeee-EEEE with the fiddle. Something about drinking. Something about being alone. References to it being cold. Come on. You’ve heard it before.

Actual Wolf is City Pages’ Best Songwriter of 2013 and is tearing up the regional scene. The Roe Family Singers are a two-time NATIONAL CHAMPION Americana jug band with their own radio segments on KFAI and an equally ambitious catalog. You might not have heard of In Theory, but these three Minnesota ladies are a contemporary folk version of the Dixie Chicks and you’ll hear them on the radio someday.

Those seagulls in down by Bayfront in Duluth have been acting awfully funny lately. Not normal. They got the crazy eyes. So many of them. So quiet. Just perched up there, lookin’ at you. Lookin’ at your loved ones. Them hungry, godless eyes.

Great Northern Radio Show.

Saturday, June 29.

Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
