Obama to name Charlotte mayor to transportation, not Oberstar

President Obama is expected to announce Charlotte, N.C., mayor Anthony Foxx to be the next Secretary of Transportation, according to the Charlotte Observer. Obama was considering several names, among them former U.S. Rep and House Transportation Chair Jim Oberstar (D-MN), a longtime northern Minnesota political figure and national transportation expert.

Oberstar was considered a long shot for several reasons, among them his age and some policy dust-ups with the administration when he was House Transportation Chair. Nevertheless, Minnesota’s Democratic congressional delegation had urged Obama to select Oberstar anyway.

Foxx is just 42 and a close political ally of the president. This Charlotte Observer story paints him as a rising political star. He will replace outgoing Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, an Illinois Republican.

  1. Thank God. We’ve wasted enough of Rangers hard earned tax dollars on Oberstar’s “green technologies” fiascos..
